Regulations of Judgment

Generalities of recitation field

1) Scores of research field in different sections are calculated as follows.

Tajwid: 40 scores

Pause and beginning: 20 scores

Sound: 15 scores

Tone: 25 scores

2) In the event that scores of two or more participants are equal, determination of top rank will be performed after reviewing scoring sections which in order of preference include Tajwid, pause and beginning, tone and sound.

3) The competition will be held in two stages, namely preliminary and final. Total score of participant includes 30% score of the preliminary stage and 70% score of the final stage.

4) Each participant recites 7 lines in the preliminary stage and, in case of attaining the final stage, will recite 20 lines of the Holy Quran.

5) Minimum score of participants in the preliminary stage in different sections are as follows:

Tajwid: 13 scores

Pause and beginning: 7 scores

Sound: 5 scores

Tone: 9 scores

 

Generalities of the field of memorization

 

1) Scores of memorization field in different sections are calculated as below:

Memorization accuracy: 100 scores

Tajwid: 40 scores

Pause and beginning: 20 scores

Sound: 15 scores

Tone: 25 scores

Note. In all stages of competitions, final score of memorizer will be calculated as 70% score for memorization accuracy and 30% score recitation accuracy.

2) In case of equal scores for two or more participants, determination of top rank will be performed after reviewing the scoring sections which by order of preference include accuracy of memorization, Tajwid, pause and beginning, tone and sound.

3) Competition will be held in two stages, namely preliminary and final. Total score of participant includes 30% score of preliminary stage and 70% score of final stage.

4) Tajwid judges will include total mark for each of the questions to be asked from the memorizer on a separate basis and final score of memorizer’s Tajwid will be an average of them.

Note. If a memorizer fails to answer a question or he/she makes a mistake to the extent that before completion of question, his/her recitation is stopped by the memorizers’ guide, the judges of the field of accurate memorization will deduct only the score of that question from the memorizer. The score of memorizer’s Tajwid in such cases includes average score of questions to which the memorizer has failed to answer them until the end of the question.

 

Details of scoring in the sections

 

Tajwid (40 scores)

This section includes three parts:

  1. a) Accurate recitation
  2. b) Recitation Tajwid (30 scores)
  3. c) Recitation eloquence (10 scores)

 

  1. a) Accurate recitation

Instances of deduction of 3 scores

1) Omission, addition, displacement or change of a letter, word and more than one word (including phrase, line and verse)

2) Omission, addition or change of sounds to each other (such as change of short sounds to extended sounds and vice versa)

3) Omission and addition of escalation and nunation

Note. In case of any mistake in pronunciation of escalation, maximum 1 score will be deducted at the discretion of judge.

4) Connection to rest, stop to movement and non-observance of stop to rest and replacement.

Note 1) In all the above cases, in case of immediate correction, one score and in case of correction after stopping, 2 scores and failure to correct the mistake, 3 scores will be deducted.

Note 2) It is required that the judging panel reminds the reader his/her possible mistakes at the end of recitation.

Note 3) Repetition of each error in all the aforesaid cases in paragraphs 1-4 will result in deduction of scores according to the note of paragraph 1.

Note 4) These mistakes will result in deduction of scores by the judging panel of recitation accuracy in the recitation competitions, but Tajwid judges will deduct no score from the memorizer.

5) For each verse, recitation less or more than the specified level 3 will result in deduction of score.

  1. b) Recitation Tajwid:

1 score deduction instances

1) Complete change of outlet of letters or distinguished features

Note: In case of incomplete utterance, 0.5 score will be deducted.

2) Non-observance of each of Tajwid regulations and instructions

Note 1) In case of accumulation of more than one rule in a position, each one will be calculated and will result in score deduction separately.

Note 2) In case of incomplete non-observance of the aforesaid instances such as balance, 0.5 score will be deducted.

3) Non-common interference or excess in pronunciation of two adjacent letters (such as interference of letter A in letter M in the word یعلمون or letter A in letter L in the word نعلن and the like) will result in deduction of 0.5 to 1 score at the discretion of the judge.

4) Inherent disorder in pronouncing Quranic words (stutter) proportional to its intensity will result in deduction of 1-2 scores for each word (only for one time). In case of any moment mistake in pronunciation of movement, letter, word and prompt correction, 0.5 score will be deducted.

  1. c) Reading fluency

By fluency, it is meant clear pronunciation of letters and movements based on pure Arabic accent without any ambiguity.

Reading fluency has totally 10 scores as follows.

1) Fluent pronunciation of letters: 4 scores

2) Distinguished pronunciation of movements: 4 scores

3) Adjustment of reading speed: 2 scores

Instances of score deduction up to 4 scores:

1) General disorder in distinguished pronunciation of adjectives and orders of letters

2) Poor observance of adjectives and orders of letters

3) Shortcoming and excess in pausing on still and intensified letters

Instances of deducting 0.25 score

1) Qualitative and quantitative disorder in short and extended movements

2) Disorder and shortcoming in the quality of pronunciation of movements based on eloquent Arabic accent

3) Deficient and excess stretch of short and long sounds

4) Disproportionate speed for pronouncing letters and movements during recitation (speeded and delayed pronunciation of some of the words and terms)

Pause and beginning (20 scores)

Deduction of score in the preliminary stage is as follows:

1) Exceeding the required pause: 2 scores

2) Incomplete pause and beginning: 2 scores

3) Breathing during reading: 1 score

4) Abundance of pause or connection priority: 0.5 score

5) Unreasonable repetition of a part of a verse: 0.5 score

6) Long pause more than about 15 seconds: 0.25 score

* Long pause in stopping positions will result in deduction of score only in the field of recitation and no score will be deducted in the field of memorization.

Deduction of score in the final stage will be performed as follows:

1) Major pause and beginning: 3 scores

2) Neglecting the required pause 1.5 scores

3) Pause and beginning which changes the meaning: 1.5 scores

4) Breathing during reading: 1 score

5) Pause or beginning between the verses which changes the meaning: 1 score

6) Pause and beginning which does not change the meaning: 1 score

7) Abundance of priority of pause or connection: 0.5 score

8) Unreasonable repetition of each part of the verse: 0.5 score

9) Long pause more than about 15 seconds in pausing intervals: 0.25 score

* Long pause in pausing intervals will result in deduction of score only in the field of reading and no score deduction will accrue to that in the field of memorization.

Note. Maximum score in this section is 20 scores. Scores of 19/5 or 20 is awarded upon agreement of the judges and when the participant has no mistake.

 

Sound (15 scores)

In the field of recitation:

1) Resonance: 4 scores

2) Flexibility: 3 scores

3) Area (extent): 3 scores

Area score for sound is distributed as follows:

* From the highest bass level of the sound to 2 octaves: 3 scores

* From the highest bass level of the sound to 1.5 octaves: 2 scores

* From the highest bass level of the sound to 1 octave: 1 score

* From the highest bass level of the sound less than 0.5 octaves: 0.5 score

4) Desirable and artistic use of sound: 2 scores

5) Volume: 2 scores

6) Tremolo: 1 score

* In case of jump of water into the throat, hiccough and the like, 0.5 score is deducted from the score for each case only by the sound judge.

 

In the field of memorization:

1) Resonance: 5 scores

2) Flexibility: 3 scores

3) Area (extent): 2 scores

Area score for sound is distributed as follows:

* From the highest bass level of the sound to 1 octave: 2 scores

* From the highest bass level of the sound less than 1 octave: 1 score

4) Desirable and artistic use of sound: 2 scores

5) Volume: 2 scores

6) Tremolo: 1 score

* In case of jump of water into the throat, hiccough and the like, 0.5 score is deducted from the score for each case only by the sound judge.

 

Tone (25 scores)

In the field of recitation:

  1. a) Distribution of scores:

1) The power to process the tunes: 5 scores

2) Adjustment and distribution of tones on expressions (measurement): 5 scores

3) Good pronunciation and observance of spiritual interpretations and humility in recitation: 5 scores

4) Creativity and innovation according to the common procedure of recitation in radif tones: 5 scores

5) Diversity of tone radifs: 4 scores

6) Providing custom sound deduction in mode: 1 score

 

  1. b) Score deduction instances:

1) Unconventional beginning of recitation (unexpected recitation): 1 score

2) Irregular modes: 1 score

3) Excessive pressure in execution of tunes: 0.5 score

4) Imbalance speed of recitation: 0.5 score

5) Non-tunable or irregular mode of sound and undesirable tremolos: 0.5 score

 

In the field of recitation:

  1. a) Scores:

1) Observance of Tartil style (speed of reading, balance of recitation, avoiding from special tremolos): 6 scores

2) The power to process the tunes: 5 scores

3) Adjusting and distribution of tunes on the expression (measurement): 5 scores

4) Good pronunciation and observance of spiritual interpretations and humility in recitation: 3 scores

5) Creativity and innovation according to the common procedure of Tartil: 3 scores

6) Diversity of tone mode: 3 scores

 

  1. b) Score deduction cases:

1) Irregular modes: 1 score

2) Excessive pressure in execution of tunes: 0.5 score

3) Imbalance speed of recitation: 0.5 score

4) Non-tunable or irregular mode of sound and undesirable tremolos: 0.5 score

 

Accuracy of memorization (100 scores)

1) Mistake in motions and letters (omission, addition, displacement and change):

1.1) Prompt correction by the memorizer: 0.5 score

1.2) Non-correction by the memorizer: 1 score

* By letter in this section, it is meant alphabetic letters it does not include words which are considered letters in Arabic grammar (such as Hatta, Ela, Fi, An). In case of any mistake in such words, score deduction will be made in the word column.

* If a short motion is changed to another short motion, only one instance of score deduction is considered for the memorizer, such as change of عبادٌ to عبادٍ, اَنتَ to اَنتِ.

* If a stretched motion is changed to another stretched motion, only one score is deducted from the memorizer, such as change of اِنّهُ to اِنَّها, تابوُا to تابَا.

* If a short motion is changed to a stretched motion of its similar type or vice versa, only one score will be deducted from the memorizer, such as change of قالَ to قالا, ربّی to ربِّ.

* If a short motion is changed to a stretched motion not of its similar type or vice versa, two scores will be deducted from the memorizer, such as change of قالَ to قالوا, فأتوا to فأتِ.

* One letter in pronouns, one letter in relative pronouns, present letter and similar cases, when changed, they will be considered as letters and score deduction will be made in the same column, such as change of منهُم to منکُم, منهُ to منکَ, الَّذی to الَّتی, تَغفرُ to یَغفرُ.

* It should be noted that the letter with its accompanied motion will be totally considered as one letter and only one time score deduction will be made.

Note. In cases where recitation of memorizer is ambiguous due to change of the letter or its pronunciation, score deduction will be made only in one section upon agreement of the judges.

 

2) Mistake in one word (omission, addition, displacement and change):

2.1) Prompt correction by the memorizer: Deduction of 1 score

2.2) Correction by memorizer by the notification of guiding judge: Deduction of 2 scores

2.3) Non-correction by the memorizer: Deduction of 3 scores

* Those words in the Holy Quran which are in terms of a combination of letters and word or two or more words, will be considered as one word considering the writing style of the Holy Quran, such as فليقاتل, فسيكفيكهم, فاسقیناکموه.

* If in displacement of letters (and not in diacritic), the root and meaning of a word change, score deduction will be made in the word section, such as change of یعلمون to یعملون, نصیر to بصیر.

* One word and one motion in a word, before or after that, will be considered as one word in score awarding and the related score deduction will be made in the word column, e.g., و اللهُ instead of اِنَّ اللهَ, و ربُّک instead of مِن ربِّک.

* One letter and one word adjacent to each other will be considered as one word in the score section and the related score deduction will be made in the word column, e.g., هذه انعام و حرث instead of و قالوا هذه انعام و حرث.

* Each of the single or multiple letters is considered as one word and any disorder in it or some of its letters will result in score deduction in the wrong word column.

3) Mistake in word (omission, addition, displacement and change):

3.1) Prompt correction by the memorizer: Deduction of 1.5 score

3.2) Correction by memorizer by the notification of guiding judge: Deduction of 2.5 scores

3.3) Non-correction by the memorizer: Deduction of 4 scores

* By words, it is meant a phrase more than one word, such as والمجاهدون باموالهم و انفسهم فی سبیل الله instead of و المجاهدون فی سبیل الله باموالهم و انفسهم, والله خبیر بما تعملون instead of والله بما تعملون بصیر.

* بسمله at the beginning of Suras is considered as a phrase.

4) Non-observance of order of verses and their displacement:

4.1) If only one verse is neglected:

4.1.1) Prompt correction by the memorizer: Deduction of 2 scores

4.1.2) Correction by memorizer by the notification of guiding judge: Deduction of 3 scores

4.1.3) Non-correction by the memorizer: Deduction of 4.5 scores

4.2) If more than one verse is neglected:

4.2.1) Prompt correction by the memorizer: Deduction of 2.5 scores

4.2.2) Correction by memorizer by the notification of guiding judge: Deduction of 3.5 scores

4.2.3) Non-correction by the memorizer: Deduction of 5 scores

* By transfer to another verse(s), it is only meant transfer to the beginning of verses. In case of any mistake during the verse, it will not be considered as transfer and score deduction will be made in the column of words.

* If the memorizer makes mistakes in the verses with similar beginnings, score deduction will be made in the column of words.

* If the memorizer makes mistakes in transferring from the end of a Sura to another Surah which begins with single letters and recites another single letter wrongly, score deduction will be made in the column of transfer to farther verses, such as recitation of طه instead of کهیعص after completion of Kahf Surah. As for the similar single letters, the guiding judge can wait until the memorizer continues the verses and after specification of type of mistake, the judge can perform score deduction in the column of word or transfer to a farther place, such as recitation of المر instead of الر after the completion of Towbah Sura and recitation of الم instead of المص after completion of Anaam Sura.

* Mistake in verses shorter than one line will be included in phrase mistakes column.

* If the short neglected verses are more than one line, they will be considered as transfer to a farther place.

* If a memorizer fails to recite a verse which is more than one line and the guiding judge helps in all the verse, 4 scores will be deducted for each line.

 

5) Pause and repetition

If a participant pauses more than the conventional limit or repeats a phrase for two times, 0.5 score will be deducted for each pause and each time of repetition.

* If a participant fails to continue recitation after a pause, the guiding judge will help and a negative score will be considered for the memorizer based on the type of help.

* If a participant recites wrongly after a pause, the guiding judge will help and, in addition to deduction of a score for pause, the judge will deducted scores from the memorizer based on the type of help.

* If a memorizer fails to recite a phrase in the verse and after a pause, the judge will first mention the first word if it is possible. In case the memorizer continues reciting, score deduction will be made in the word column. In case memorizer fails to continue the rest of the verse, the judge will recite the expression and will deduct a score in the column of words.

* If memorizer forgets the beginning of a verse and pauses to remind that, the guiding judge should help the memorizer by reading the beginning phrase of the verse and then deducts a score in the word column.

* If at the beginning of recitation and asking a question by the judge, the memorizer does not understand the question and asks for help from the guiding judge for that question or during the recitation seeks the confirmation of judge for the recited part or asks the name of the Sura, page number or verse number from the judge, 0.5 score will be deducted from the memorizer for each case.

* As for the questions starting from the beginning of any Sura, the guiding judge will only mention the name of the related Sura and will not read the beginning of that.

* After the question of the guiding judge, if the memorizer begins recitation after saying استعاذه and بسمله and then asks the judge to repeat the question, score deduction will be inserted in the column of words.

* If the return of memorizer for reminding the next part is more than one sentence, 0.5 score will be deducted from the memorizer for recitation of each additional breath from the past.

* If the memorizer makes another mistake in recitation after making the first mistake and notification of judge, only the first mistake will be the ground for score deduction and in such case, score deduction will be made in the non-correction column for the same mistake.
